Irsko bylo po mnoho století součástí
Velké Británie, přičemž tato země
zařadila mezi své řádové dekorace také
vyznamenání odkazující k patronovi
irské země – Řád svatého Patrika. Po
získání své samostatnosti počátkem
dvacátých let minulého století se Irové
snažili o obnovení všech svých tradic
a zároveň – podobně jako tehdy Česko-
slovensko – odmítali určité společenské
standardy britské monarchie, mezi nimi
i existenci řádových dekorací. Tento
stav zůstal zachován do současnosti,
i když v posledních letech jsou stále
častěji vedeny diskuse ohledně vzniku
záslužných dekorací. Naproti tomu
Irsko krátce po vyhlášení samostatnosti
založilo několik záslužných medailí
a postupným vznikem dalších (zvláště
ve čtyřicátých a v šedesátých letech)
si vytvořilo ucelený systém oceňování
zásluh dosažených ve všech sférách
lidské činnosti. K nejvýznamnějším
irským medailím patří Vojenská medaile
Za chrabrost, založená v roce 1944 ve
třech stupních, celkem dvanáct zásluž-
ných Medailí Za službu v mezní situaci,
pocházejících ze stejného roku, případně
Medaile Za vynikající službu, z roku
1964. Mezi poslední vytvořené záslužné
dekorace pak náleží Medaile Za službu
v mírových misích OSN, z roku 1987,
a Vojenská hvězda, vytvořená v roce
1998.
Medaile Za vynikající službu (An
Bonn Seirbhise Dearscna) je udělována
irským občanům za zásluhy ve všech
sférách lidské činnosti ve třech stupních.
For several centuries, Ireland was a part
of Great Britain, and during that time
its order decorations also included the
honour referring to the patron saint of
the Irish lands – the Order of St. Patrick.
After gaining its independence at the
beginning of the 1920s, the Irish tried to
renew all of their traditions and at the
same time – similarly to Czechoslovakia
at the time – rejected certain societal
standards of the British monarchy,
including the existence of order decora-
tions. This status has remained to this
day, even if in recent years there have
been ever more frequent discussions
about creating decorations of merit. In
contrast to this, shortly after declaring
its independence, Ireland founded
several medals of merit and with the
gradual creation of others (especially
in the 1940s and 1970s), it created
a comprehensive system of awarding
merit achieved in all spheres of human
endeavour. Among the most important
Irish medals are the Military Medal
for Gallantry, founded in 1944 in three
degrees, a total of 12 meritorious Emer-
gency Service Medals in the same year,
and the Distinguished Service Medal
from 1964. Among the latest decorations
of merit created are the Service Medal
for UN Peacekeeping from 1987 and the
Military Star, created in 1998.
The Distinguished Service Medal (An
Bonn Seirbhise Dearscna) is conferred
upon Irish citizens for merit in all
spheres of human endeavour in three
degrees.

Na území dnešní Itálie existovalo až do druhé
poloviny 19. století několik státních celků, které
měly své vlastní řádové dekorace. Italská faleristická
tradice je velmi rozsáhlá a sahá až do poloviny
14. století, kdy savojský vévoda Amadeus VI. založil
Řád zvěstování. Další řádové dekorace vznikaly na
dnešním italském území během následujících století
a tato činnost vyvrcholila těsně před sjednocením
země. Nový stát převzal jak původní vyznamenání
Sardinského království, např. Řád svatých Mořice
a Lazara (založen roku 1816) a Vojenský savojský řád
a v roce 1956 byly obnoveny dva bývalé královské
řády – Vojenský řád Itálie a Řád Za pracovní zásluhy.
K celkové proměně italských řádů došlo v roce 2001,
kdy byly modifi kovány stanovy a změnila se také jejich
výtvarná podoba, aby se přiblížila původní italské
faleristické tradici. Systém vyznamenání je dále
doplněn o velké množství záslužných a pamětních
křížů či medailí.
Řád zásluh o Italskou republiku (Ordine al Merito
della Repubblica Italiana) má pouze jednu skupinu
a je určen k ocenění civilních a vojenských zásluh
italských občanů i cizích státních příslušníků. Řád
tvoří pět tříd, přičemž nejvyšší třída je při udělení
hlavám cizích států většinou doplněna o řádový řetěz.
Until the second half of the 19th
century, several states existed on
the territory of today’s Italy, each
with their own order decorations.
The Italian faleristic tradition is
very extensive and reaches back
to the mid-14th century, when the
Savoy Duke Amadeus VI founded
the Supreme Order of the Most Holy
Annunciation. Other order decora-
tions were created on the territory
of today’s Italy in the following
centuries, and this activity reached
its peak just before the country was
unifi ed. The new state took over
both the original honours of the
Kingdom of Sardinia, such as the
Order of Sts. Maurice and Lazarus (founded in 1816) and the
Military Order of Savoy (founded in 1815), as well as founding
new decorations such as the Order of the Crown of Italy
(founded in 1868) and the Order of Merit for Labour (founded
in 1901). All of these honours, however, were liquidated with
the transformation from a monarchy to a republic. But the
newly-formed state did not remain without decorations of
merit. The fi rst decoration was created in 1947, the Order of
the Star of Italian Solidarity, intended for domestic citizens
as well as foreigners who were meritorious in the country’s
renewal. The highest Italian honour, the Order of Merit of the
Italian Republic, was created in 1951, and in 1956 two formerly
royal orders – the Military Order of Italy and the Order of
Merit for Labour – were renewed. An overall transformation of
Italian orders occurred in 2001, when their regulations were
modifi ed and their artistic appearance was also changed so as
to bring them nearer to Italy’s original faleristic tradition. The
system of honours is further complemented by a large num-
ber of crosses of merit and memorial crosses and medals.
The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Ordine al
Merito della Repubblica Italiana) has only one group and is
intended for the acknowledgement of civil and military merit
of Italian citizens and foreigners. The order is made up of fi ve
classes, of which the highest class is usually complemented
by the order’s chain when it is conferred upon foreign heads
of state.
