The island of Cyprus has played an important role in the existence of crusade
states in the Holy Land. In the 12th to 14th centuries, the Kingdom of Cyprus
belonged among the important headquarters of knightly orders, especially
the Sovereign Military Hospitalier Order of St. John of Jerusalem, which later
changed its name according to another Mediterranean island, Malta. Because of
the knightly orders, the island had widespread contact with the European states
of the time, and in the mid-14th century, the Cypriot King Peter visited the court
of the Czech King Charles IV. The modern state of Cyprus, however, has not taken
over its faleristic tradition from the middle ages, and its fi rst state honour was
created in 1981, or more than two centuries after declaring its independence. The
name of Cyprus’ most important honour, the Order of Makarios III, recalls the
creator of the fi rst president of the modern state of Cyprus, who was originally
the archbishop of Nicosia. This decoration is complemented by the Order of
Merit of the Republic of Cyprus and several commemorative medals.
The Order of Makarios III (Τάγμα Μακαρισυς) is conferred in one group to
both domestic citizens and foreigners. It has 6 classes, the highest of which, the
Grand Cross with Chain, is mostly designated for honouring the highest foreign
leaders.
Ostrov Kypr hrál významnou úlohu v existenci křižáckých států ve Svaté zemi.
Kyperské království patřilo od 12. do 14. století k významným sídlům rytířských
řádů, zvláště pak Rytířského a špitálního řádu svatého Jana Jeruzalémského,
jenž později změnil jméno podle jiného středomořského ostrova, Malty. Díky
rytířským řádům měl ostrov rozsáhlé styky s tehdejšími evropskými státy
a v polovině 14. století dokonce kyperský král Petr navštívil dvůr českého krále
Karla IV. Novodobý kyperský stát však svoji
faleristickou tradici ze středověku nepřevzal
a svá první státní vyznamenání vytvořil až
v roce 1981, tedy více než dvě desetiletí po
vyhlášení své samostatnosti. Jméno nej-
významnějšího kyperského vyznamenání,
Řádu Makaria III., připomíná tvůrce prvního
prezidenta novodobého kyperského státu,
původně nikosijského arcibiskupa. Tuto dekoraci
pak doplňuje Záslužný řád Kyperské republiky
a několik pamětních medailí.
Řád Makaria III. (Τάγμα Μακαρισυς) je
udělován v jediné skupině vlastním občanům
i zahraničním státním příslušníkům.

Gedymina a v roce 1930 pak nejvyšší litevské vyzname-
nání – Řád Vitolda Velikého. Litva tak v názvech svých
řádů plně uplatnila vlastní historickou tradici. Celý systém
vyznamenání byl doplněn několika pamětními medailemi,
ovšem s okupací Litvy a její ztrátou samostatnosti v létě
1940 došlo i ke zrušení litevských vyznamenání.
a jedna zcela nová dekorace, Řád Za zásluhy o Litvu.
Řád Vitolda Velikého (Vytauto Didžiojo Ordinas) je
udělován v jediné skupině jak litevským občanům, tak
cizím státním příslušníkům, a to za mimořádné zásluhy
o Litevskou republiku. Je tvořen pěti třídami, přičemž
nejvyšší z nich někdy bývá, většinou při udělení cizí hlavě
státu, doplněna řádovým řetězem jako zvláštní formou
vyznamenání.

LITEVSKÁ REPUBLIKA
REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA
While Lithuanian statehood dates from the 13th century, its faleristic
tradition is connected with the Republic of Lithuania, which was
formed after the end of World War II. This Baltic country also created
its fi rst decoration, the Cross of Vytis, in 1919, in appreciation of
military merit during the war for independence. The honour was
renamed to the Order of the Cross of Vytis in 1927, and is conferred
for military and civil merit. The Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke
Gediminas was formed in the same year, and the highest Lithuanian
honour – the Order of Vytautas the Great – was formed in 1930. In
the names of its orders, Lithuania has fully asserted its own historic
traditions. The entire system of honours was complemented by several
commemorative medals, but together with the occupation of Lithuania
and its loss of independence in the summer of 1940, its honours were
also cancelled. After the renewal of Lituanian independence at the
beginning of the 1990s, the new state fully laid claim to its faleristic
traditions and renewed all of its original order decorations. The Order
of Vytautas the Great again became the highest Lithuanian honour,
complemented by the Order of the Cross of Vytis, conferred for military merit, and the
Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, conferred for civic merit. Memorial
crosses and medals are also part of the honours system, as is an entirely new decora-
tion, the Order for Merits to Lithuania.
The Order of Vytautas the Great (Vytauto Didžiojo Ordinas) is conferred in a single
group to both Lithuanian citizens and foreigners, for extraordinary merit to the
Republic of Lithuania. It is made up of fi ve classes, the highest of which tends to be
conferred upon foreign heads of state, complemented by the order’s chain as a special
form of honour.
