resolve the paradox. Because the road is neither inside nor outside, or it is
both inside and outside. In Islamic mysticism, the guide (mentor) accom-
panying the traveller on the road, the friend or the loved one is almost the
road itself. However, the thou existence accompanying me during the
journey is not the Absolute Thou but is just the reflection of that existence.
It is the existence with which the longing for the real one is experienced.
Here the thou entity is not something that is considered in epistemological
sense. I reach it through a lived experience, not with an abstract and rational
thought. The thou entity with whom I walk is the statement of the idea that
“He” is with me. In any case, it is a mysterious journey, and is the subject
matter of a meta-problematic field. For this reason, it is considerably diffi-
cult to express. If we consider this journey of man only in this world and as
a journey between states, then the aim of the journey (or of life) is lost. Then
life becomes a journey with no goal, which is nonsense. In this case, in Mar-
celian terms, the ontological meaning is lost.
1
Because man is on the entity
dimension, and not on the object dimension, the loss of his meaning is the
loss of existence. Of course man’s honour is also lost in such a world. A
man who is more and more self-alienating and is devoid of honour cannot
be a Homo Viator because he loses his hope in addition to his honour. Yet,
man is a Homo Viator walking towards the ontological mystery with sym-
pathy -or love. In the words of Islamic mysticism, man’s existence is mea-
ningless unless there is a walk towards maturity. Man’s gaining of meaning,
however, is the real salvation, is the act of joining in the real entity. The sal-
vation road is a metaphysical route leading to recognising the mystery of
existence with hope, love, loyalty and confidence. Love, loyalty, confidence
and hope constitute a form of participation in the mystery of existence, and
it is only possible with unconditional adherence to the being- in other
words,” by having faith in Him”. Such an adherence is adherence to a
“thou”, or walking the road with a “thou”.

The Reading of the Homo Viator in the Light of Islamic Mysticism
(summary)
In this article, the concept of Homo Viator, that connects Marcelian “road”
and “viator” and “being” and “existence”, will be analyzed through a comparison
that is indicative of the culture of Islamic Mysticism. Islamic Mysticism (also can
be expressed as Classical Sufism) is a way of forming and ethical system by inter-
nalizing the basic principles of Islam and by transferring them to an existential le-
vel. It is a way to perfection. To walk on such a road is a mysterious journey in a
meta-problematic field. Therefore, the expression this experience through words is
rather difficult. Marcel chose to use metaphors to express the content of this parti-
cular experience, and this choice of expression is so familiar to the readers who
study also the Islamic Mystic tradition. Taking the metaphor of journey for the ex-
pression of human existence and defining the human being as a “being on the road”
is common to the Islamic Mysticism and Marcel’s thought.
Indeed, Islamic Mystic-
ism itself is a “road” and to go through that road is like being a homo viator. The
concepts of Marcelian Philosophy provide us with what Islamic Mysticism simply
tries to mean by the same metaphor and with the possibility of renaming it today.
And we also find in Islamic Mysticism the meanings that Marcel has difficulty
conceptualizing. In this context, the reading of Marcel in the light of Islamic My-
sticism will present to us a new language in the systematically of the Western
world on the one hand, and the possibility of realizing the new horizons pointed by
the philosophy of Marcel on the other. Further, the reading of Marcel inspired by
Islamic Mysticism will give us the possibility of extending Marcel’s philosophy to
those horizons by combining his conceptualizations with the deeper meanings of
Islamic Mysticism.

Homo Viator-un İslam mistisizmi işığında oxunması
(xülasə)
Bu tədqiqatda Marselin yol ilə yolçunu, varlıq ilə mövcudluğu qovuşduran
Homo Viator məfhumu, təsəvvüf kültürünə xas bir müqayisə ilə nəzərdən keçirilə-
cəkdir.
lə anlatmaq istədiklərini bugün ifadə edə biləcəyimiz məfhumlara Marsel fəlsəfə-
tərəfdən isə Marsel fəlsəfəsinin işarə etdiyi üfüqləri görmə imkanı qazandıracaqdır.
Hətta belə bir mütaliə Marselin fəlsəfəsini, onun terminlərini təsəvvüfün dərin
mənaları ilə birləşdirib o üfüqlərə daşımağı təmin edəcəkdir.
