It is possible coming across examples of rock art in all parts of world in-
habited by man. The authors of these images were different groups of people,
hunter-gatherers, fishermen, human communities who were engaged in cattle-bree-
ding. The meanings of these images can be seen the lifestyle of people, their
outlooks, beliefs, technical innovations clearly for thousands of years. Thus, animal
images give information about the ecosystem, flora and fauna of the area, also
weapons and tools about technical skills, images relating myths and beliefs about
outlooks of ancient people.
Images created open rock surface, on the walls and ceilings of shelters and
deep caves, rock boulders are attributed to rock art. Considering these aspects rock
images located on the rock surface differ from samples of “portable art’’ creating
on the bone, wood and textile. Petroglyph (images are generated by the method of
stone carving), pictograph (painted images) and big earth figures – geoglyphs and
intaglios are included in rock art.
The paper deals with problems relating with semantics and periodization of
rock carvings are highlighted.
