Parmi les nombreux partis que nous avons pris pour rendre le plus fidèlement possible un texte difficile et semé de chausse-trapes, certains au moins méritent d'être exposés au lecteur.
La traduction de Beruf, « métier-et-vocation », mot-clé pour Weber à bien des égards (cf. Le savant et le Politique), exigeait que soit sauvegardée avant tout la tension sémantique entre ses deux pôles. Nous l'avons rendu par « métier » (ou profession) dans un contexte religieux, par « vocation » dans un contexte professionnel, afin de souligner cette tension qui fonde la thèse même de l'ouvrage. Toutefois il serait inexact de présupposer partout ces deux acceptions complémentaires, en particulier dans un contexte biblique où cela reviendrait à introduire un anachronisme : en pareils cas, nous nous sommes contentés de « besogne », ce vieux mot des Écritures, qui nous a semblé rendre au mieux la notion en son état indifférencié.
Weber utilise Bewährung et bewähren au sens théologique de « preuve/ épreuve », « prouver/éprouver », mais aussi au sens commun de « vérifier ». Au premier sens nous nous sommes tenus dans la mesure du possible à « épreuve » (« probation » ne serait plus toujours compris en dehors des milieux protestants), sans toutefois nous interdire de recourir à « attestation » et même « confirmation » pour le salut de la langue. Ce vocable est utilisé d'ailleurs de façon beaucoup plus lâche dans le deuxième essai.
Individuum, Eigenart ont été traduits (not. p. [30] et [87]) le Plus littéralement possible; Konsequenz, au singulier, par « enchaînement systématique » ou « cohérence logique ». Zurechnung par « imputation» (causale). Idealtypus est généralement rendu en français par « type idéal ». Nous avons conservé ce qui peut déjà passer pour un usage, bien qu'à notre opinion il conviendrait de se contenter de « type idéel », non seulement pour éviter tout risque d'un éventuel jugement de valeur, certes, mais surtout pour conserver à cette notion la fonction d'analyseur que Weber lui attribue. Weber dit expressément que le type idéal du bordel n'est pas la perfection de bordel ou le bordel idéal, mais la notion du bordel que chacun se construit pour soi. En aucun cas il n'exprime une réalité, tout au plus sert-il à déceler et analyser les relations qui peuvent exister dans cette réalité. Nul n'y peut contredire, mais seulement proposer un meilleur instrument.
